What is a Medical Data Breach?

Modified on Wed, 19 Nov at 9:49 AM

More than 59 million patient records were breached in 2022, up from approximately 40 million in 2020. Healthcare is now the second most targeted industry for cyberattacks—largely because medical data can be worth up to 50 times more than payment data on the black market.

The most alarming part? Many victims never find out their private information has been stolen.

Misuse of medical data can lead to:

  • Fraudulent medical bills

  • Incorrect medical records

  • Denied insurance coverage

  • Bankruptcy

  • Arrest due to false medical identity

  • Improper medical treatment—which can cause injury or, in extreme cases, even death

That’s why HealthLock actively monitors reputable data sources for medical breaches and alerts you whenever we detect a breach at one of your providers. If your information is used fraudulently, we help resolve the issue and guide you through the full remediation process.

How it works:

  1. You receive an email or text alert when we detect a breach involving one of your providers.

  2. Log in to your HealthLock member portal to review the details.

  3. If you see a claim you don’t recognize, click “Report potential fraud.”

  4. A fraud Case is opened and assigned to a Personal Healthcare Champion (PHC).

  5. Your PHC investigates the issue and keeps you informed throughout the process.

  6. Once resolved, your PHC notifies you of the outcome and next steps (if any).
