What is a medical data breach?

Modified on Wed, 15 May at 2:41 PM

Over 59 million patient records were breached in 2022. That's up from around 40 million in 2020. Healthcare is the second most targeted industry for cyberattacks. Why? Because medical data is worth up to 50x more than payment data on the black market.

The worst part? Most of the people impacted have no idea that their private information is currently in the wrong hands. The misuse of your medical information can lead to bankruptcy, arrest, and improper medical care resulting in injury—and even death in extreme cases.

That's why HealthLock monitors data sources for medical breaches and alerts you whenever we detect a data breach at one of your providers. If your information is used fraudulently, we'll help you fix the problem and guide you through the remediation process. Here's how it works:

  1. Member receives email/text notification of breach and is directed to log in.

  2. If the member doesn’t recognize a claim associated with the doctor, they click ‘Report potential fraud’.

  3. A fraud case is opened on the claim. The case is assigned to a Personal Healthcare Champion (PHC) for resolution.

  4. The PHC notifies member of outcome.
